Venice Carnival is one of the most legendary festivals of Italy. It is the ultimate masquerade set on the stage of a floating city. The costumes and masks are both elaborate and exquisite, and the city transforms into a spellbinding network of canals and bridges, inviting visitors to step back in time to the magic of Venetian life as Casanova might have experienced it. In 2018, while living in Italy we attended an enchanting Carnival. The theme centered around the circus and was inspired by the visionary Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, a great admirer of this magical world.
A Spectacular Opening Night on Water
The Carnival opened with a breathtaking water show. The water parade paid homage to Fellini’s love for the circus, with stunning visuals and performances bringing his artistic vision to life. Exotic animals were conjured in the form of massive marionettes—said to be the largest in the world—as acrobats performed daring stunts high above the water. Their shadows danced across the ancient stone walls of Venice, casting an ethereal glow on the city’s historic architecture.
The Flights of St. Mark’s Square
St. Mark’s Square, the heart of Venice, came alive with grand celebrations. The Carnival Angel, made her awe-inspiring descent from the Campanile to the square below, officially inaugurating the festivities. Her costume epitomized elegance and splendor. Another highlight was the Flight of the Eagle, a surprise orchestrated by Renzo Rosso. The spectacle drew gasps from the crowd as a daring performer soared above the square, embodying the fearless spirit of the Carnival.
An Evening of Glamour & Mystery: The Grand Dinner and Ball
The gothic halls of Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, perched on the Grand Canal, hosted the official dinner and ball of the Carnival. The event featured a mesmerizing combination of Nuart’s artistic performances, the entertainment of Prince Maurice, and the exquisite costumes of Atelier Pietro Longhi. Guests dined on gourmet Venetian cuisine while dancers, musicians, and actors created an atmosphere of intrigue and excitement. As midnight struck, the night continued with live music and cocktails, ensuring the revelry carried on into the early hours.
The Bridge of Sighs
While the Carnival’s vibrant celebrations unfolded, we took a moment to visit Venice’s iconic landmarks, including the famous Bridge of Sighs. Made of sparkling white limestone, this historic bridge once connected the interrogation rooms of the Doge’s Palace to the prison. According to legend, condemned prisoners would sigh at their final view of Venice through its small windows before descending to their cells. The bridge’s haunting beauty has inspired countless visitors, including the English poet Lord Byron.
